Class duration: 40 minutes

The teacher enters the classroom and says “good morning” to students. The teacher encourages students to say “good morning” in return.

The teacher reviews the previous class and writes students’ responses on the board. S/he then draws a tree on the board and asks students what that is. Once the students answer, the teacher asks, “What is a family tree?” S/he encourages the students to guess and then explains the concept of family tree.

Next the teacher draws his or her family tree on the board and writes each family member’s name by labelling the tree. The teacher writes a small paragraph beside the tree, “Hello! I am (full name). I’m ___ years old. I’m a teacher. I work at (name of the institution). My father’s name is (full name). He is a (occupation). My mother’s name is (full name). She is a (occupation). My grandfather’s name is (full name), He was a (occupation). He has retired now. My grandmother’s name is (full name). She is a homemaker.” The teacher ensures that the students have understood what a family tree is by asking them concept check questions.

Next the teacher distributes the attached handouts containing a blank family tree to the students and tells the whole class to draw and write about their family in the same way the teacher has modelled. The teacher moves from person to person and monitors. The teacher will facilitate wherever needed.

The teacher collects the handouts and tells the students that their works will be returned with feedback in the next class. The teacher then ends the class by saying “goodbye”.

Class duration: 40 minutes

  • Lesson objectives: The students will learn-
  • to introduce their families elaborately in English
  • the concept of the family tree properly
  • Materials: NCTB Textbook Unit 5 lesson 1-2, board, markers.
Steps Activity Times

The teacher enters the classroom and says “good morning” to students. The teacher encourages students to say “good morning” in return.
5 Minutes

The teacher reviews the previous class and writes students’ responses on the board. S/he then tells students that they are going to play a game today which is called “Simon says” and whatever Simon says the students will have to do that. Next the teacher demonstrates the game by saying, “Simon says sit down”. The teacher sits down and encourages the students to sit down. Next the teacher says, “Simon says stand up”. The teacher stands up and encourages the students to stand up. Once the demonstration is done the teacher stops modelling and lets the students do the activity on their own.

The teacher next gives the following instructions to students by saying, “Simon says sits down”, “Simon says stand up”, “Simon says get your English book out of your bag”, “Simon says open your book”, “Simon says close your book”, “Simon says raise your hand”, “Simon says put down your hand”. The teacher gives the instructions fast and changes the instructions from time to time to add some fun to the game. Once done the teacher selects 2/3 students to come forward and give the same instructions to the whole class and the students have to follow
